The goal of project 3 was to explain the reasoning behind why the LGBTQ+ community is marginalized by the majority of Ugandans. The vast majority of Ugandans do not support gay people, and people can have severe punishments for identifying with these labels.
Global Studies
For global studies, I researched the reasoning behind the strong hatred of this community in Uganda. I found 5 core reasons and then expanded on them. These included: Culture, Religion, Economy, Politics, and British Colonial Rule. I created a mind map in order to explain why the LGBTQ+ community is marginalized in Uganda. |
Art
For art, I researched the same topic, but specifically focused on lesbian sculptor Leilah Babirye, who fled Uganda for safety reasons. Part of her artistic journey involved seeing people at a concert wearing traditional West African masks in order to conceal their identity. This concept inspired her to create busts that share different stories from the LGBTQ+ community. I used this as inspiration for my art project, making a more personal connection with a mask. There are various symbols that connect to my experience, but also draw inspiration from her work. Another piece of reasoning behind her work is the materials she uses. In Luganda (a major language spoken in Uganda), there is a common slang term for gay people: "ebisiyaga", which basically translates to trash. Babirye uses discarded materials, or "trash", in order to create her sculptures. |
English
For English, I created a job resumé using Smart Futures, which included things like education, experience, and certifications. I also wrote a research paper on different colleges I am interested in. I researched Savannah College of Art and Design, Florida State University, as well as University of Southern California. I researched following parameters: cost, scholarships, acceptance rate, size, location, majors/minors, activities, real experience, and after-college earnings. The most important factor, for me, is my major. I plan on majoring in Film and Television, so wherever I go, there has to be a decent program for this. Overall, this paper created more (overarching) questions than it answered, but I think it'll still be helpful in the long run.
